Super Tuscan
The Super Tuscans are a recent phenomenon, whose origin is linked to the Chianti Classico and the limits imposed by the strict regulation on the used grapes, set by Baron Bettino Ricasoli in 1872: 70% Sangiovese and the rest of Canaiolo and Malvasia grapes.
In the late 60s of the '900, some Tuscan wine makers dare where no one had dared before, and decided to produce some labels, which were detached from the bonds of discipline, sometimes adding or replacing the Sangiovese with other types of grapes.
The Marquis Incisa della Rocchetta was the first to experiment with new grapes and produced the Sassicaia, the forerunner of Super Tuscan, followed shortly after by the first true Super Tuscan, Tignanello Antinori Marchese, who joined the Sangiovese Cabernet Sauvignon.
These wines could not qualify under the DOC denomination and at the beginning they were appreciated only abroad.
For this reason the denomination Super Tuscan was coined by Robert Parker, critic winemaker, who was the first to recognize the quality of these wines.
