Sparkling wines: business card of Made in Italy
Of the 5.6 billion euro of Italian exports in 2016, more or less 1 billion euro comes from Made in Italy sparkling wines. At the present 30% of world trade wines are sparkling wines and 15.4% are Italian.
While world wine exports are static or even declining, Italy is the first country for volume of sparkling wines exported with about 355,110,000 bottles per year.
Italian sparkling wines export trend has been growing for 12 consecutive years: compared to 2015, it is + 13% in volume and + 7.5% in value.
The positive trend of exports is mainly thanks to the Prosecco DOCG and DOC which marks a + 20% in 2016, of which 2/3 of the total is consumed by United Kingdom, United States and Germany.
The traditional method, especially the Franciacorta, is gaining momentum too with about 3 million bottles consumed in 2016 especially in Japan and United Kingdom.
For Mr. Giampietro Comolli, patron of OVSE, the statistical observatory founded in 1991, that conduct consumer surveys in 48 countries, «This growth in consumption is the tangible attestation of the recognition by foreign consumers of Made in Italy sparkling wines high quality and unique identity».
