Forbidden Wines
The "forbidden" wines exist, but not for the law; can not be called wine and they can not be marketed because "wines no wine": only the fermented juice of the fruit of Vitis vinifera can be called wine.
They are the result of hybrid vines born in '800 as a solution to the invasion of the pest called phylloxera. Their proliferation at the expense of the vitis vinifera led to an overproduction of poor wines and to the perception of the danger represented by the quality of the product. Italy began in 1931 to prohibit their cultivation because they feared irreparable damage to the historic wine-growing heritage and for the vine and wine culture. Also their grapes were not suitable for a proper wine and contain toxic substances, which, if taken in excessive doses, can lead to physical ailments
