Originally, the Arabic word "qahwa" identified a drink extracted from some seeds that caused stimulating and exciting effects on humans. Today in Arabic this word indicates the coffee. It is believed that coffee term derives from the name of the region in which this plant was more widespread: the Caffa, southwestern Ethiopia. Nowadays, the world's leading coffee producers are, in order, Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia and Indonesia, followed by Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Ethiopia and India. Coffee is a beverage that is obtained by roasting and grinding the seeds of some tropical tree species belonging to the botanical family Rubiaceae. Worldwide there are about a hundred species of plants coffèe, however those recognized as important and useful for commercial purposes are only ten. Among them the most widely spreaded and known are Coffea arabica (known as "Arabian"), Coffea canephora (known as "robust") and Coffea liberica. Venice, for its commercial relations in the East was the first city to make use of coffee in Italy, probably from the beginning of the sixteenth century and was considered an aristocratic drink. The first machine to make coffee at home was invented in Naples in 1691: it was the famous Neapolitan coffee maker. The Espresso coffee was combined with other ingredients, and the most famous coffee based drinks have Italian names: Espresso, Cappuccino, Macchiato. Over time Italy has become the official ambassador of the Espresso philosophy.
